Austin food and drink, without the guesswork

ATX Top Eatery is a running list of the places worth eating and drinking at in Austin, Texas — one page to scroll instead of an evening spent deciding.

Austin has a food problem, and it is a good one. There are more genuinely excellent places to eat here than anyone can keep in their head — and the list turns over constantly. A trailer parked behind a bar on Cesar Chavez becomes the best thing in the city, gets a brick-and-mortar, and half of us find out two years late. Meanwhile the same eight restaurants get written up over and over, because that is what happens when a list is written once and left alone.

This site is the other approach: one page, added to continuously, covering everywhere in town worth your evening — the institutions, the trailers, the coffee counters and the places that opened last month.

How to use it

Scroll. Every listing carries a name, a one-line summary and a link that takes you straight to the business’s own website, where the hours, the menu and the address live. Nothing here is behind a sign-up, and there is nothing to install.

If you would rather not decide at all, the surprise me button picks somewhere for you — which is, on a Tuesday evening, the fastest route to dinner this site has to offer. The Trending right now panel shows what people are opening today, and Recently added shows the newest arrivals, because sometimes the interesting thing is simply what is new.

How a place gets on the list

You add it. Paste the business’s website into the box at the top of the page and we read the name, description and logo straight off their site so you do not have to type any of it. Change anything that looks wrong, and post. The whole thing takes about fifteen seconds.

A website is the unique signature of a listing, so an eatery can only be on the page once. If somebody already added your favourite, we will point you to it. You can add one place every 30 minutes.

Frequently asked

What is this site, exactly?

A list of places to eat and drink in and around Austin, kept in one page. It exists so that deciding where to go takes a scroll instead of an hour of tabs, group texts and guesswork.

Who can add a place?

Anyone. There are no accounts and no sign-up. Paste the restaurant's website, check the details we pull from it, and post. You can add one eatery every 30 minutes, which is enough for enthusiasm and not enough for spam.

What counts as an eatery?

Anywhere in and around Austin that feeds or waters you: restaurants, taco trailers, barbecue joints, coffee bars, cocktail rooms, dive bars, bakeries, ice cream counters and breweries all belong here.

Do you write the reviews?

There are no reviews and no star averages. Each listing carries a one-line summary — usually pulled straight from the business's own site, sometimes written by whoever added it — and a link that takes you there. What you make of the place is yours to decide.

How is the list ordered?

Loosely by how much interest a listing gets, with a few eateries featured by hand. The order is a way of arranging a long page, not a verdict on anybody's cooking — treat everything on here as worth a visit.

Is the site free?

Free to browse and free to add an eatery, always. Running it does cost money, so you may see advertising on the site in future. It will be labelled as advertising when it appears.

Who made this

One person who lives here, eats out too much, and got tired of texting the same recommendations to friends. It is a side project and it is free to use. If a listing is wrong, out of date, or a business that has closed, the fastest fix is to say so — and if you know an eatery that deserves to be on here, put it on.

Know somewhere that belongs on this list?

Adding it takes fifteen seconds and helps the next person who is standing on a sidewalk deciding where to eat.
